Tonka: In the Catacombs was my first Tonka game that I wrote. In the Catacombs is a 2D tile maze / puzzle game similar to Chip's Challenge and was written in mid 2006 using VB6. The objective is to navigate through the levels collecting items and pushing balls / blocks to solve puzzles and get to the exit.

Features

  • The levels consist of different terrains that take the form and look of an underground catacomb. Such terrains were dirt, water and lava. Items such as keys could be picked up to open doors and iron stilts to walk across lava. There were two different types of balls that could be pushed around the map. The balls would melt in lava and sink in water just like Tonka would if he would to step into it, the only exception is the blue ball which can float on the water and act as a raft for Tonka to get across water.
  • Other features were conveyor belts which would transport Tonka, creatures and items around. Switches will change the direction of the conveyor belts when stepped on. Secret passage ways also exist which allows Tonka and creatures to get from one place to another.
  • Creatures would come in different types such as skeletons and ghosts. Each creature would have a different way of moving around for example skeletons only move back and forth by reversing their direction when they hit something such as a wall.
  • A feature which was never implemented were boss levels where Tonka would be under the pressure of time, speed and a much larger creature which could attack in multiple arrays compared to normal creatures. These levels would occur less often than normal levels and would gradually get harder just like the normal levels as the game progresses.
